Lakes District Employment and Career Services officially opened the doors to their new location last week.

Kelly Turford, owner of the service said the new location at Park Place on Francois Lake Drive is central to the downtown core and is easier for their  clients to access.

Previously the service was located at the Lakeview Mall.

"Most of the clientele don't have a driver's license, so this is a much better location to serve those clients," she said.

Lakes District Employment and Career Services has been privately owned and operated by Turford since 2002.

All programs and services offered are funded through the provincial government's labour market services division, and all are offered to local residents free of charge.

Those working less than 25 hours per week or those that are unemployed can register to be part of the available workers database. Their resumes will then be automatically submitted to employers when a relevant position is advertised.

A resume and cover letter service is also offered as well as a resource centre and computer lab.

Four computers are available for job searching or other career related activities and the resource centre is stocked with 'how to' books on a variety of job and career related topics.

Lakes District Employment and Career Services also offers employment counseling.

"We  offer group sessions discussing job search strategies such as cold calling, how to present well for an interview and interview techniques," Turford said.

She said the services offered by Lakes District Employment and Career Services are in desperate need in the local area, especially after the downturn in the forestry sector.

However, she said things are now starting to look up for local job seekers as there is currently an abundance of jobs available.

According to Turford, the retail service industry traditionally has the most employment opportunities locally. "The majority of our clients fit into this realm."

Lakes District Employment and Career Services helps approximately 500-700 walk in clients every month. "We service a large area, from Fraser Lake and Endako to Topley and Granisle, as well as the Southside."

For more information on available services phone Lakes District Employment and Career Services on 250-692-1826 or stop by the office Monday to Friday, between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
