April 9, 2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge - a First World War battle in which regiments from coast to coast saw action together in a distinctly Canadian triumph. Blain Cunningham鈥檚 great uncle Keith, who was at Vimy Ridge, picked up daffodils 24 hours after the battle and sent one back to his grandfather. Accompanying it was a note saying, 鈥淲ell, gran, enclosed is a small flower picked in the spot where the Canadians made such a great drive. It was picked about 24 hours after the great drive took place, when our officer, a sergeant and myself were coming over the ground with our officer commanding to get to our new position beyond, and the ground was all yellow with them, so we had to stop and pick a few of them as souvenirs,鈥 he wrote.
