Best wishes from all the LDAC volunteers for a successful and happy and healthful 2019.
Here is some of what is happening in our community over the first, busy weeks of the New Year:
Jan. 20 - Verdi’s ‘Aida’ at The Beacon Theatre, starring Anna Netrebko: Live in HD
The Beacon Theatre and the LDAC kick off the season of Met Operas: Live in HD on Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. sharp with a performance of Aida. Verdi’s drama, one of the most popular operas in the repertoire, is set in ancient Egypt. The Ethiopian Aida lives a life of slavery. She falls in love with the Egyptian warrior Radamès. Aida’s rival for the love of Radamès is the princess Amneris: the classic operatic love triangle. The HD broadcast showcases star soprano Anna Netrebko in the title role. Netrebko appears alongside mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvilli, who takes on the role of Amneris. Tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko plays Aida’s lover Radamès, and baritone Quinn Kelsey is Aida’s father Amonasro. Nicola Luisotti conducts the production. All tickets are $12 and are available at the door. Remember, cash only at The Beacon. See you there.
Jan. 21 - Cheng2 Duo at the ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake Community Church
The fourth performance in LDAC’s thirteenth season takes place on Jan. 21 at the ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake Community Church (formerly the First Mennonite Church) on Kerr Road 1 kilometre east of ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake. The Quebec-based Cheng2 Duo, who have recently been heard on CBC Music (Radio Two), will bring their youthful energy to ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake, as part of a northern B.C. concert tour. Pianist Silvie Cheng and cellist Bryan Cheng are sister and brother, and have been making music together for 14 years. They have performed in Carnegie Hall, and are one of CBC’s ‘30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30’. The pair has a refreshing approach to performing classical music, playing with infectious joy, good humour and consummate skill. Look for LDAC’s posters around town, and our ads in Lakes District ÑÇÖÞÌìÌÃ. Tickets for this performance are available at Process 4 circle arts Gallery, the Lakes Artisan Centre and Lakes District Printing and Stationery, and at the door the evening of the performance. Local photographer Karen Cyr will exhibit her work in the lobby before the show and at intermission, and baking will be provided by Konrad Feldmann. Don’t miss this great performance to start off 2019 with beauty and joy.
