An idea that originated with the Chief Louie Paddle Company, which is owned and operated by the Cheslatta Carrier Nation has blossomed.

The Chief Louie Paddle Company were researching methods and mediums to market their products and distribute them more efficiently.

In addition they wanted access to export markets, such as Germany or Japan.

After discussions with individual artists and cooperative groups, it was determined that many local artisans in Northern B.C. faced similar challenges and the Enterprising Artisans Project was developed in response, with a focus on the specific potential of the local artist.

Community Futures Nadina, the Chief Louie Paddle Company, and Rio Tinto Alcan, in partnership with funding from REDI B.C., a Community Futures of B.C. Initiative as well as the Nechako Kitimaat Development Fund, have now announced a new collaborative grass roots project to work with local artisans.

The project will help bring local artisan's products to market through the Enterprising Artisans Project.

The project will operate in the Nadina region which includes ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake, the Southside, Granisle, Topley, Houston, Telkwa, and Smithers.

The initial stages of the work will explore the local art industry through an inventory of how many local artists there are.

The project will also look at quality, production, product potential, along with a thorough market analysis of the demand for various kinds of art.

An integral piece of the project is to gather artisans together to form advisory groups in each community.

These groups will guide future development and process in the creation of a common brand and online distribution portal.

The Enterprising Artisans Project will be looking for interested artisans to take part in the development of this project.

The Community Futures website will have information on public events or information sessions in your community. Go to www.cfnadina.ca for more information.

To discuss the project directly please contact Andrea Newell, project coordinator, at the CF Nadina Houston office on 250-845-2522.
