Alfonso Cuaron鈥檚 鈥淩oma鈥� and Yorgos Lanthimos鈥� 鈥淭he Favourite鈥� led all films with 10 nominations each to the 91st Academy Awards, while Netflix and Marvel each scored their first best picture nomination.
The nominees for best picture are: 鈥淎 Star Is Born,鈥� 鈥淩oma,鈥� 鈥淕reen Book,鈥� 鈥淭he Favourite,鈥� 鈥淏lack Panther,鈥� 鈥淏lacKkKlansman,鈥� 鈥淏ohemian Rhapsody鈥� and 鈥淰ice.鈥�
Netflix has scored its first best picture nomination, something the streaming giant has dearly sought. Marvel, too, joined the club with 鈥淏lack Panther,鈥� the first superhero movie ever nominated for best picture.
Spike Lee was nominated for his first directing Oscar 30 years after a writing nod for 1989鈥檚 鈥淒o the Right Thing.鈥� Notably left out of the category was Bradley Cooper, whose 鈥淎 Star Is Born鈥� landed eight nominations, including best actress for Lady Gaga, but was overlooked for Cooper鈥檚 direction.

On behalf of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, presenters Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross unveiled nominations Tuesday morning from Los Angeles鈥� Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.
The nominees for best actor are Cooper, Christian Bale (鈥淰ice鈥�), Willem Dafoe (鈥淎t Eternity鈥檚 Gate鈥�), Rami Malek (鈥淏ohemian Rhapsody鈥�) and Viggo Mortensen (鈥淕reen Book鈥�).

The nominees for best supporting actress are Amy Adams (鈥淰ice鈥�), Marina De Tavira (鈥淩oma鈥�), Regina King (鈥淚f Beale Street Could Talk鈥�), Emma Stone (鈥淭he Favourite鈥�) and Rachel Weisz (鈥淭he Favourite鈥�). Tavira was something a surprise, while Claire Foy of 鈥淔irst Man鈥� was left out.
Up for best supporting actor are: Mahershala Ali (鈥淕reen Book鈥�), Adam Driver (鈥淏lacKkKlansman鈥�), Sam Elliott (鈥淎 Star Is Born鈥�), Richard E. Grant (鈥淐an You Ever Forgive Me?鈥�) and Sam Rockwell (鈥淰ice鈥�). Notably snubbed was Timothy Chalamet (鈥淏eautiful Boy鈥�).
The lead-up to Tuesday鈥檚 nominations was rocky for both the film academy and some of the contending movies. Shortly after being announced as host, Kevin Hart was forced to withdraw over years-old homophobic tweets that the comedian eventually apologized for. That has left the Oscars, one month before the Feb. 24 ceremony, without an emcee, and likely to stay that way.

Some film contenders, like Peter Farrelly鈥檚 鈥淕reen Book鈥� and the Freddie Mercury biopic 鈥淏ohemian Rhapsody,鈥� have suffered waves upon waves of backlash, even as their awards tallies have mounted. On Saturday, 鈥淕reen Book鈥� won the top award from the Producers Guild, an honour that has been a reliable Oscar barometer. In the 10 years since the Oscars expanded its best-picture ballot, the PGA winner has gone on to win best picture eight times.
The season鈥檚 steadiest contender 鈥� Cooper鈥檚 鈥淎 Star Is Born鈥� 鈥� looked potentially unbeatable until it got beat. Despite an enviable string of awards and more than $400 million in worldwide box office, Cooper鈥檚 lauded remake was almost totally ignored at the Golden Globes. Still, 鈥淎 Star Is Born鈥� was the sole film to land top nominations from virtually every guild group.
The academy is reportedly planning to go host-less following Hart鈥檚 exit, something it has tried only once before in an infamous 1989 telecast that featured a lengthy musical number with Rob Lowe and Snow White.
The Oscars last year hit a new ratings low, declining 20 per cent and averaging 26.5 million viewers. Though ratings for award shows have generally been dropping, the downturn prompted the academy to revamp this year鈥檚 telecast. Though initial plans for a new popular film category were scuttled, the academy is planning to present some awards off-air and keep the broadcast to three hours.
