When the red recording light flashed on at Hollywood鈥檚 storied Roxy Theatre, the pressure was on the Tragically Hip to put on a good show, guitarist Paul Langlois recalls.

It wasn鈥檛 long before those nerves receded into the background, said Langlois, as frontman Gord Downie punctuated the rollicking set list with ad libbed musings.

The May 3, 1991 live performance will be released as a stand-alone album on digital streaming platforms, vinyl and CD on June 24, after being remastered for the Hip鈥檚 30th anniversary 鈥淩oad Apples鈥 box set last year.

The concert has earned coveted status among Hip collectors over the decades, both because of its storied Sunset Strip venue and Downie鈥檚 off-the-cuff charisma, said Langlois.

鈥淎s soon as we started, you kind of forget about the recording,鈥 Langlois said by phone ahead of Thursday鈥檚 announcement.

鈥淚t was worry-free and intense and fun.鈥

The show, which was originally recorded for a radio broadcast, consists solely of the Hip鈥檚 early 鈥渞ockers,鈥 said Langlois, including 鈥淟ittle Bones,鈥 鈥淟ong Time Running鈥 and 鈥淐ordelia.鈥

The album also features the fabled nine-minute rendition of 鈥淣ew Orleans Is Sinking鈥 known to fans as the 鈥渒iller whale tank鈥 version, a reference to Downie鈥檚 mid-song 鈥 possibly apocryphal 鈥 anecdote about a job cleaning an aquarium.

The rest of the band riffed behind Downie鈥檚 improvisational interjections, and when necessary, steered him back to the song, said Langlois.

鈥淗e鈥檚 running across the water and we鈥檙e trying to keep him afloat underneath,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e were all in it together, so we could sense when to put the pedal down.鈥

鈥淟ive at the Roxy鈥 is available for pre-order. One of the tracks, 鈥淪he Didn鈥檛 Know,鈥 was released for purchase or streaming Thursday.

Langlois said he expects listeners will 鈥渇eel like you were there鈥 as they rock along with the recording.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very much us, I think, at one of our primes.鈥
