What’s on tap for the arts council

The Lakes District Community Choir spring concert: ‘Going Home, Gospel, Goodies and Festival Highlights’.

On Saturday, May 10 the Lakes District Community Choir spring concert: â€˜Going Home, Gospel, Goodies and Festival Highlights’. Doors open at 7 p.m., at the First Mennonite Church. Admission is by donation, and refreshments will be served at intermission.

On Sunday, May 11, the final ‘Met: live in HD’ transmission of this season takes place at the Beacon Theatre at 1 p.m. sharp. Prince Igor, Alexander Borodin’s defining Russian epic comes to the Met for the first time in nearly 100 years. Dmitri Tcherniakov’s new production is a brilliant psychological journey through the mind of its conflicted hero, with the founding of the Russian nation as the backdrop.

Music from the opera became well known in the 1953 American musical ‘Kismet’, in particular the ‘Gliding Dance of the Maidens’ from the Polovtsian dances, which provided the melody for the popular song ‘Stranger in Paradise’. Star bass-baritone Ildar Abdrazakov takes on the monumental title role, with Mikhail Petrenko as Prince Galitsky, Oksana Dyka as Yaroslavna and Anita Rachvelishvili as Konchakovna. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the Met Orchestra.

All tickets for this performance are $12 and are available at the door. Free ‘Arts for Youth’ tickets are available at the door for students and guests. Please ask an Arts Council volunteer at the door.  We hope you’ll give this performance a try if you’ve not yet seen a ‘Met HD’ opera production this season. Audience reviews so far have been rave reviews, and the Lake District Arts Council hopes to present Met operas in the 2014/15 season next year, in partnership with the Beacon Theatre.

On May 20 and May 21 the ‘Grace and Gratitude’, a guitar and dance show, takes place on the Lakes District Secondary School (LDSS) -  main stage, each night at 7 p.m. A performance by the LDSS dance guitar classes, in a production by LDSS teachers Rayanne Charlie and Steve Wilejto.
