Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, has issued the following message:

"Happy New Year! I extend my best wishes to all British Columbians as we join together in 2017 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada's Confederation.

"Ours is a nation born of conversation. The discussion started with the Fathers of Confederation and it continued through the decades, across the Great Lakes and the prairies and over the mountains until we became this incredible nation from sea to sea to sea.

"As Canada continues to evolve, becoming more diverse and inclusive, we have a shared responsibility to carry on the conversation that started 150 years ago. Canada's sesquicentennial is an opportunity to renew our care for our great land, to focus on reconciliation with our Indigenous peoples and to engage with youth about their vision for our nation's future.

"Throughout 2017, I look forward to hosting and participating in a number of events that celebrate Canada 150, many of which will focus on diversity, reconciliation, youth and the environment. I plan to engage in conversation with youth by visiting 150 schools in British Columbia, to speak with students about Canada's constitutional monarchy, to encourage their participation in our democracy and to share ideas about a healthy and sustainable future for all.

"Join me this year in celebrating our history, culture and achievements as Canadians and let us all work together to continue to build this great nation."
