The first and greatest commandment given to Israel after their rescue from bondage was: 鈥淵ou shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.鈥 Having been eye-witnesses of his power and majesty, all forms of idolatry were to be cast away. God had made himself known.
The problem with idolatry is its faulty source. Any man-made idea or object, crafted from limited imaginations and helpless hands, is logically as impoverished as its maker, and cannot be God.
Self-worship and celebrity-worship is another form of idolatry. While everyone should have a healthy form of self-worth, the problem with crossing the line into self-worship, is that no human is God.
Then there is mysticism, or angel (spirit)-worship. The Bible defines angels as spirit-beings who are not 鈥榞ods鈥 but rather, God鈥檚 servants, who worship Jesus (Hebrews 1:6). This is why even rogue angels (demons) shrieked with fear when they saw Jesus, saying, 鈥淗ave you come to judge us before the appointed time?鈥 Sadly, even Christianity is infiltrated by mysticism, under the false teaching that an angel can lead one closer to God. But the Bible is emphatic: there is one God and one Mediator between God and man, and that is Jesus Christ alone.
To all these forms of idolatry, Jesus is the cure. He is not crafted from human imaginations, but tangibly walked on earth.
He proved he was from Heaven as he claimed, by His miraculous power. He proved He was not an angel, but the one and only Son of God, by offering eternal life to all who place their faith in Him.
Like Father, like Son. No wonder the Bible says: 鈥淎t the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the delight of God the Father.鈥
