A new musical initiative is set to hit Southside this fall with the formation of the Southside Multigenerational Community Band, spearheaded by renowned composer Simon Cole of the Alban Classical Artists Society Northern BC.
This program aims to unite musicians of all skill levels and is open to residents of all ages, starting from around age 12 and up.
Thanks to a generous grant from the federal government鈥檚 New Horizons for Seniors Program, the program is entirely free for participants. In addition to the no-cost participation, musical instruments will also be provided at no charge.
Simon Cole, who has led the Alban Classical Artists Society since it became an official non-profit in 2011, spoke to Lakes District 亚洲天堂 about the new program.
鈥淥ur focus is on classical music in all its forms (including popular, folk, jazz etc), from professional concerts to community music programs,鈥 Cole said.
The band will begin its journey with a foundational approach, using a basic band method book provided to all participants. As the program advances, musicians will have the opportunity to tackle more challenging pieces, explore a variety of musical styles and collaborate with other groups, Cole said.
Cole, who also arranges and composes music, said usually groups like these display a healthy collaborative learning environment where experienced players help guide beginners.
The program is slated to run from mid-September to March, comprising 32 sessions. Instruments available for use include flutes, clarinets, saxophones, and trumpets, with music stands and all necessary materials also provided.
The initiative, while open to everyone, will initially prioritize Southside residents for instrument selection before extending availability to those from surrounding areas.
鈥淲e decided to start a Band on the Southside because in part, it was something we could do to contribute to the community but mostly because it's a positive, healthy and spiritual activity,鈥 Cole said.
Playing in a group is fun, exciting and rewarding, he added, while highlighting the positive health benefits of playing an instrument.
鈥淔or example playing a band instrument that involves blowing is gentle cardio.  When we play music all of our brain is engaged.鈥

Families are encouraged to join together, and seniors are welcomed to connect with younger participants, creating a multi-generational dynamic that Cole believes will be both enjoyable and beneficial.
Those interested do not need to have any previous experience to join the band.  And for those who have had previous experience but are rusty, it is an opportunity to re-hone those skills or to take up a new instrument from the one you play now, he said.
鈥淚t is great to have a group where people of different generations can work together and learn from each other.鈥
Residents interested in participating or learning more about the Southside Multigenerational Community Band can contact the Alban Classical Artists Society for additional details.
