Audrea Wulf is a former Lake resident and an Indigenous artist who was born in the area of Tuktoyaktuk, a region of Northwest Territories and currently lives in Salmon Arm.

She most recently illustrated the book “Freddie the Flyer.”

According to Wulf, she received a message from Tundra Books and Penguin Random House on her Facebook art page, requesting her to work on the book.

She agreed to take on the project, but was nervous as she had never received such a request before.

She mentioned that the work required a lot of team effort and was a learning experience for her.

The children’s picture book was written by Danielle Metcalf-Chenail and Freddie Carmichael.

The book tells the story of Freddie Carmichael, who established his own airline business in Inuvik, Reindeer Air Service Ltd. Back in the day, everyone had to charter a small plane to travel for medical reasons, berry picking, hunting or to visit relatives in the next communities.

Wulf mentioned that everyone knew Reindeer Air Service and felt safe to fly with Freddie, as he was familiar with the land, weather, and people.

“Fred is loved by everyone back home, despite having many titles after his name.”

Wulf said that it was easy for her to agree to illustrate the book because she lived in the area.

She always admired Freddie and mentioned that he had the qualities of becoming a pilot even as a young boy.

It took her eight months to complete the artwork for the book, but she is proud of the final result.

The book has a lot to offer, conveying the essence of the North – the love for the land, the strength, the determination of Northern people, and how they care for each other.

Wulf wants readers to experience the sensation of the North, and how people depend on each other to live and travel in this harsh land.

She mentioned that the North has colors and landscapes like no other place.

Despite the hardships and cold weather, she loves the North and its unforgettable people.

Wulf feels emotional whenever she looks at the paintings, and is happy with the final result. She uses paintings and illustrations to express her love for the North.

Wulf expressed her gratitude to Fred and his wife Miki for choosing her to illustrate the book.

Freddie the Flyer book is sold all over Canada and the United States, and can be purchased through Amazon.ca and Indigo books.
