The 2024 BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge concluded on July 21, with the 亚洲天堂 Lake U13 girls' basketball team scoring big wins.

The games, which took place from July 17- 21 saw over 3000 athletes competing across various sports.

Among them were the U13 girls from Zone 7, whose performances stood out amidst fierce competition. The U13 team consisted of 10 girls out of which eight are from 亚洲天堂 Lake and the other two from Vanderhoof and Hazelton.

Rachelle van Zanten, the coach for the Zone 7 U13 girls team, reflected on the challenges and triumphs her team faced throughout the event.

"We had a great time at the BC Summer Games," she said, emphasizing the test of fortitude for both athletes, coaches and chaperones alike.

The journey involved early mornings, long days, and the emotional highs and lows that come with competitive sports at a young age.

"Our week was filled with waiting for busses, playing tough games, laughter, and managing the emotions that come with being 12-years-old and away from family," van Zanten said.

Most of the girls on the team were novice basketball players who began participating last year in their school programs and the Jr NBA.

The coach said they assembled the team during try-outs in early April, focusing on intensive practice leading up to the BC Summer Games in mid-July.

Despite these hurdles, the girls showed remarkable determination and secured victories in three games.

"We faced very tough, dialed teams and had to learn quickly how to hold our own," van Zanten said.

One particularly memorable match against Cariboo-East caught the attention of BC Premier David Eby, who attended and celebrated alongside the team.

Van Zanten said, Premier Eby's presence made it feel like "a gold medal match" and elevated the significance of the match for the girls.

The team is now eagerly anticipating their upcoming grade 8 basketball season with newfound skills and team spirit.

Van Zanten expressed gratitude towards the support coaches who contributed to the team's preparation over the preceding five months, underscoring their invaluable role in the team's success.

Meanwhile, the Zone 7 U13 boys team also made a notable impact at the Games, holding their own against formidable opponents, including the silver medallists. Despite facing a significant size mismatch in terms of tryouts, the boys demonstrated commendable skill throughout the tournament.
