The BC Wildfire Service is tackling eight new wildfires in the Northwest Fire Centre as of August 10.
All fires are currently classified as 'out of control' following over 400 lightning strikes in the region on Aug. 9
The largest blaze spans 17,840 hectares west of Ghitzeli Lake, while another fire is 0.3 hectares in size in the Narrows between Ootsa and Whitesail.
Additional wildfires include a 10-hectare blaze 5 kilometres south of Babine River and a 0.9-hectare fire south of Tesla Lake. Four other fires are burning in the area west of Witset.
Residents should be aware that smoke from these fires may be visible from Highway 16 and surrounding areas. At this time, no evacuation alerts or orders have been issued.
The wildfire service says it is mounting a full response to the fires.
It says a full response is initiated when there "is a threat to public safety and/or property and other values, such as infrastructure or timber. During a full response, a wildfire is suppressed and controlled until it is deemed "out."
This typically involves the use of helicopters or planes and ground crews.
