An 'out of control' wildfire near Cripple Forest Service Road has rapidly expanded to 777 hectares. Due to the fire's proximity and its quick spread fuelled by high winds, a temporary road closure has been implemented Aug. 19, on Germansen Landing Road, affecting travel between Germansen & Hat crossing (km 35) and Germansen & Cripple Creek crossing (km 46).
The Cripple FSR wildfire was discovered on Aug. 12. BC Wildfire reported that planned ignitions were conducted on August 15.
"These were implemented to secure flanks ahead of drying conditions and predicted gusty winds in the afternoon, removing potential fuels from the fire's oncoming path," BCWS said in its update.
Efforts are currently focused on establishing containment lines with heavy equipment and utilizing aviation resources to reduce the fire's intensity. These measures aim to slow the fire's progression, ensuring safer conditions for both ground crews and equipment.
The road closure will be reassessed in 24 hours to determine if an extension is necessary.
