A 亚洲天堂 Lake resident is supporting the BBC documentary alleging numerous environmental violations by Drax Global.
The documentary examines various environmental and regulatory challenges linked to Drax's biomass operations in Canada, including logging old-growth wood for the pellet plant and high emissions of its facilities in B.C.
Specifically, emissions in 亚洲天堂 Lake were reported to be three times the allowed limit in one instance. These include exceeding permit limits on particulate matter (PM) pollution. PM pollution can have immediate and long-lasting effects on human health, with some citations even associating it with premature mortality
Drax, a UK-based renewable energy company, acquired Pinnacle Renewable Energy鈥檚 pellet plant in 亚洲天堂 Lake in April 2021.
Local resident Mike Comeau expressed particular concern about emissions affecting air quality and environmental standards in 亚洲天堂 Lake.
He said he reported instances of smog from the pellet plant to the local Conservation Officer, including sending photos during severe episodes.
In response to the allegations of over 180 environmental violations, including high emissions, as reported by the British broadcaster, Drax reiterated its commitment to producing biomass that benefits climate, nature, and communities near their operations.
鈥淎ccording to the local regulator, none of the instances of non-compliance which have occurred since Drax took ownership of the pellet plants have had more than a minor, temporary impact and a significant number were purely administrative in nature,鈥 said Drax spokesperson Megan Hopgood in an email statement.
鈥淲e can do better, and we are making progress in raising standards and improving our processes. We will continue to work closely with regulators and local communities,鈥 she added.
However when asked about the emission levels in 亚洲天堂 Lake reported to be thrice its allowed limit, Drax admitted there were two instances in 2023, where the company identified emissions from one of the authorized works in operation at 亚洲天堂 Lake had exceeded permitted levels.
鈥淲e submitted notice of these exceedances in compliance with permit requirements, promptly investigated to determine the cause and remedied them,鈥 Hopgood said.
The company said it undertook corrective actions and recalibrated equipment setting to ensure optimal performance, and the 亚洲天堂 Lake pellet plant has since passed four consecutive stack tests.
Drax provided an internal analysis of emissions in 亚洲天堂 Lake in 2024. The recorded levels ranged from 28.54 mg/m3 in January to 52.70 mg/m3 in May. The 亚洲天堂 Lake permit limit is 60 mg/m3.
As part of ongoing efforts, Drax said they have undertaken rigorous monitoring of plant operations to ensure compliance with local regulations, stating that emissions in 亚洲天堂 Lake and Houston meet the Ministry of Environment's permit requirements and undergo regular testing and review.
They also said they have made significant investments in advanced environmental control technologies at both locations aimed at improving emission levels.
