Two new doctors have begun practicing in ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake, which should reduce the amount of emergency department closures at Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre, according to Northern Health.
The emergency department has closed over 20 times since the start of 2025, with Northern Health blaming the closures on a lack of physicians in the area. The closures have caused significant distress in the community with many people voicing concerns.
The new doctors began practicing April 1, but Northern Health did not share any further information by press deadline.
Their arrival was just one of several measures Northern Health said would alleviate staffing pressure at the emergency department. Northern Health said it has formed a task force to investigate means of improving access to the emergency department. The task force uses recruitment incentives, which includes extended use of the GoHealthBC agency and temporary staff to fill vacant shifts. The task force is also exploring virtual services to augment in-person staff.
The emergency department requires one doctor and one nurse, 24 hours a day. The hospital is currently fully staffed with emergency department nurses, Northern Health said.
Northern Health said it understands the importance of emergency healthcare services, and that service interruptions are always a last resort when all options to keep the emergency room open have failed.
More to come.
