LDAC funds drama production at LDSS
Vancouver-based Green Thumb Theatre returns to the Lakes District early next month with a production of The Shape of Girl for the students and staff of Lakes District Secondary School, funded by the Arts Council. The drama, written over 20 years ago, has gone on to hundreds of productions world-wide. It features Braidie, struggling to understand news stories about the torture and murder of a teenage girl, and her own complicity in the bullying of another girl. Based on the story of Reena Virk, the 14-year-old who was killed in 1997 by a group of teens in Saanich BC, the drama will include a question and answer period following the 50-minute production, and includes a comprehensive resource guide.
The 24/25 Met Opera broadcasts begin in early November at The Beacon Theatre
The 24/25 season of Met Opera: Live in HD broadcasts, co-presented by the Lakes District Arts Council and The Beacon Theatre, begins on Sunday, November 10th at 1:00 pm with a new opera Grounded starring Canadian mezzo-soprano Emily D鈥橝ngelo, one of opera鈥檚 most compelling young stars. D鈥橝ngelo portrays Jess, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle, she fights to maintain her sanity as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Met Music Director Yannick N茅zet-S茅guin oversees the Met premiere of composer Jeanine Tesori鈥檚 score. The cast features tenor Ben Bliss as the Wyoming rancher who becomes Jess鈥檚 husband. Michael Mayer鈥檚 high-tech staging, using a vast array of LED screens, presents a variety of perspectives on the action including the drone鈥檚 predatory view from high above. Content Advisory: Grounded contains adult language and war sequences.
Tickets for the Met operas this season will be $15.00 each, and are available starting at 12:30 pm at The Beacon Theatre box office the day of the performance. Watch for LDAC ads closer to the broadcast date in the Lakes District 亚洲天堂.
