Francois Lakes Elementary School has announced the cancellation of its upcoming Christmas Concert, originally scheduled for December 18, following reports that the performance included "religious elements."
In a letter to families, Principal Marlee Wilson explained that the concert preparations had inadvertently incorporated religious content, which raised concerns about adherence to the BC School Act, which mandates public schools to remain non-sectarian in nature.
Wilson said the concert had to be cancelled as there was very limited time to make any adjustments to the concert.
"As a public school it is essential that our events remain non-sectarian in nature and comply with BC School Act," Wilson said in the letter.
鈥淕iven the limited time available to make adjustments, the staff has made the difficult decision to cancel this year's Christmas Concert,鈥 Wilson wrote. 鈥淲e understand this news may be difficult for many families, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.鈥
School District 91 stated that they will not provide further comment on the decision.
