Rebecca Thompson's journey into animal rescue began with a simple, but powerful, impulse: to help a dog she saw posted on the Lost and Found Pets page in 亚洲天堂 Lake. Frustrated by the sight of a frightened, vulnerable animal on the streets, she felt compelled to take action. What began as a single rescue effort blossomed into an ongoing commitment to local animals in need.
After three weeks of fostering this dog, plus unexpectedly taking in another, Thompson was struck by the generosity of the community. With help from local residents, she was able to cover the costs of spaying, neutering, deworming, and vaccinating the animals before finding them loving homes. Inspired by this outpouring of support, Flegg knew she couldn鈥檛 stop there.
"I believe the universe gives you what's yours to do, so when a situation falls at my feet, I will do whatever I can to help - within my means and abilities," Thompson said.
However, fostering animals in 亚洲天堂 Lake is not without its challenges. One of the most significant obstacles is a lack of volunteers and resources. The small, rural community struggles with an overwhelming number of stray animals, many of which are never assessed for health or temperament due to the absence of a proper shelter. Thompson鈥檚 attempts to involve outside rescue groups have often been thwarted, as many organizations are already stretched thin.
"The biggest issue is not having a place to take an animal in need of immediate shelter where they can be assessed for health, temperament and immediate needs."
Despite these struggles, the local community has been incredibly supportive of Thompson鈥檚 efforts. She recalls raising over $1,200 in just two days to cover the costs of caring for two dogs. The Village of 亚洲天堂 Lake has even held public meetings to discuss the growing stray dog population, although attendance has been lower than expected.
She said she is grateful for the guidance of the local bylaw enforcement officer, who has been instrumental in helping her understand his role in the community.
鈥�...So it really is up to us as residents, organizations, First Nations, and local government to work together to find a solution,鈥� she said.
Thompson has worked with a variety of animals in her efforts, particularly dogs, with 17 dogs and 3 cats rescued in just the past few weeks. A recurring issue she sees is the lack of spaying and neutering, which contributes to an overwhelming pet population. Additionally, hoarding is a challenge in the community, where individuals鈥� desire to help can quickly turn into overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. Pets in such situations often face overcrowding and a lack of basic resources.
One of Thompson鈥檚 most memorable success stories involves two dogs, Phoenix and Chance. Phoenix had been roaming the streets for weeks before she was brought to Rebecca鈥檚 workplace. Shy and terrified, Phoenix was eventually fostered alongside her best friend Chance. Over time, with patience and care, the pair blossomed into loving, playful companions. After finding a forever home for both, the family has stayed in touch, sending updates and photos.
The reward of seeing them trust again, seeing them relax and become the dogs they were meant to be, was absolutely heart-melting, Rebecca said.

Every effort makes a difference, she said.
She also advises newcomers to animal rescue to reach out to established organizations for guidance and to focus on making a difference one animal at a time.
Even if it鈥檚 just one animal, you鈥檝e changed their entire life, she says. 鈥淭o them, you are a hero."
"Don't be discouraged by what you can't do... just take heart in the little bit of a difference you can make."
