Warning in effect as avalanche risk continues in northern B.C.

Warmer temperatures and storms are a contributing factor to increasing risk
NLA_009
Avalanche Canada has extended its avalanche warning for many parts of B.C.

Regions in the north such as Houston and Terrace continue to have growing avalanche risks as the forecast calls for another warm, wet and windy storm, driving the danger from moderate to high risk in most forecast regions in the province and Alberta.

Avalanche Canada issued a special public avalanche warning to most B.C. and Alberta regions on Feb. 27 through the end of Monday, March 3.

Avalanche Canada says a "conservative approach" to terrain is critical, which includes watching for newly-formed and reactive wind slabs while transitioning into wind-affected terrain. Heading west toward Terrace or north toward Stewart, the danger will jump from considerable to high due to higher precipitation levels.

"When the danger rating is high, travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended," Avalanche Canada stated. "Stick to simple non-avalanche terrain that is without overhead exposure from slopes above."

Storm slabs and persistent slab avalanche problems are the primary concern, as they sit on weak interfaces in the upper metre of the snow pack. They are expected to be naturally reactive with the incoming weather, producing large slab avalanches. Once the system passes, natural avalanche activity will likely taper off, but conditions may still be primed for human triggering.

"Once the storm subsides, we recommend that you have a very conservative approach to terrain while gathering observations and information before increasing exposure to avalanche slopes," Avalanche Canada stated.

Avalanche Canada's forecasts are updated daily at avalanche.ca with the most recent information available to help aid decision-making and planning while people are out on the slopes.
