The Lakes District Museum鈥檚 new walking tour will use technology to tell the story of downtown 亚洲天堂 Lake.
The updated version of the popular tour will start at the Visitor Info Centre and take participants on a self-guided visit to fourteen historical sites in the village鈥檚 downtown core. Small signs containing QR codes will be placed at each site, and scanning them will open web pages containing vintage photographs and information about each location.
In the past, participants were guided by a pamphlet available at the museum and visitor centre, but now they only need their cell phones 鈥 making the tour more accessible and environmentally friendly.
The new Heritage Walking Tour is the brainchild of Brooklynn Klassen, the museum鈥檚 assistant curator.
"The goal of this project was to find a way to use modern technology to discover the past,鈥 Klassen said last week. 鈥淏y using QR codes that can be scanned with your cell phone, we will make 亚洲天堂 Lake鈥檚 history more accessible and bring a needed update to the current tour. My hope is that this project will increase the accessibility of local history and draw attention not only to the changes and growth that 亚洲天堂 Lake has seen in the last 101 years, but also to the present businesses that are a part of the future."
Museum staff conducted a trial run of the new digital walking tour last week. Although most of the walking tour signs will be affixed to the inside of windows in downtown businesses, a few locations 鈥 including Pioneer Park and the Beacon Theatre 鈥 will need outdoor, all-weather plaques.
People who finish the tour and then complete a short online exit survey will have their names entered in a prize draw.
If the tour proves popular, the museum may expand it to other sites in 亚洲天堂 Lake and the surrounding area, says museum curator Michael Riis-Christianson.
鈥淭he Lakes District has a fascinating history,鈥 he noted. 鈥淟ocal history matters, and technology allows us to tell this area鈥檚 story in new, exciting ways.鈥
