Residents will get to colourize some of the Lakes District Museum鈥檚 vintage black-and-white photographs this fall.
The society, which operates the Lakes District Museum and Heritage Gallery, has produced its first colouring book. Developed by museum summer student Haley Dell, it features line drawings based on 17 iconic photographs from the museum鈥檚 archives.
The colouring book is designed to appeal to artists of all ages and skill levels. Dell says she wanted to find a new way to tell this area鈥檚 story.
鈥淚 wanted to find a way to make history fun for all ages while telling a little of our community鈥檚 story,鈥 she said. 鈥溠侵尢焯 Lake has had an adventure-filled past, and I wanted to capture some of the events that made our community what it is today. I hope this colouring book will not only inspire people to learn about and explore the Lakes District, but be more creative in their day-to-day lives.鈥
Museum curator Michael Riis-Christianson thinks the colouring book is a hit with adults and children. He said he is looking forward to seeing people鈥檚 interpretation of local people, events, and landmarks.
鈥淗istory is seldom black and white,鈥 museum curator Michael Riis-Christianson noted. 鈥淭his is an opportunity for people add a little colour to it.鈥
The Lakes District Museum Colouring Book is available at the Lakes District Museum. Museum staff also hope to sell it at this year鈥檚 Christmas Craft Fair.
The proceeds will be used to support museum programming in 2025.
