BC Parks has released details of the long-awaited upgrades to Lakelse Lake Provincial Park and has set a March 28 date for accepting reservations.

The province is allocating $1.8 million for enhancements at Furlong Bay Campground. These upgrades include the addition of eight new campsites and the introduction of new electrical hookups at 41 sites. The project will also see the replacement of old water lines and outdoor taps to provide campers with access to potable water.

鈥淎s the largest warm-water lake in the region, Lakelse Lake is a highly favoured spot for camping, swimming, fishing, and boating among families, visitors, and local residents. It is considered one of the northwest鈥檚 crowning jewels,鈥 stated Cyra Yunkws, the board chair of the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine.

In June 2023, the park completed upgrades to Twin Spruce Trail at a cost of approximately $185,000. Two kilometres of the trail surface were improved to enhance accessibility and durability against extreme weather conditions. The most frequented section of the trail, spanning 800 metres from the campground to the sandy beach, is now fully accessible, with an additional 1.2 kilometres being barrier-free. Furthermore, three bridges along the trail have been upgraded, and one bridge was replaced.

Last year the Province broadened its commitment to enhancing the inclusivity and accessibility of BC Parks with the release of the BC Parks Commitment to Inclusion. This initiative ensures that frontcountry campgrounds and day-use areas are equipped with accessible and inclusive features. Consequently, the upgrades at Lakelse will improve accessibility for people using wheelchairs and strollers, or are facing other accessibility challenges.

The newly introduced campsites at Furlong Bay Campground will also feature accessible furniture, including picnic tables.

鈥淎n accessible B.C. means public parks that everyone can access and campsites that anyone can enjoy,鈥 Susie Chant, Parliamentary secretary for accessibility said.

Reservations for Furlong Bay Campground will open on Thursday, March 28, and can be made online at the BC Parks for stays between May 15 and September 2. First-come, first-served sites will also be available.
