Skin Tyee First Nation held a nomination meeting on March 6 at ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake Native Development Corporation to nominate candidates for the offices of one chief and two councillor positions.
Two people were nominated for the chief position – Jade Irwin and Ryan Tom.
Six people were nominated for council – Melissa Dyck, Destiney Michelle, Gabe Tom, David Crocker, Eunice Crocker and Shirley Wilson.
Chief Rosemary Skin, councillor Robert Skin, and councillor William Wissler were last elected for the Skin Tyee First Nation office in 2019. They are now the current council and none of them will be running for re-election.
All candidates were nominated under the Skin Tyee Custom Election Code.
The election code states that a nominee can either run for the office of chief or the office of councillor, but not both. Candidates must be 18 years or older and have to pay a non-refundable deposit of $100 within 48 hours of the nomination meeting. They must be a band member for at least 12 months and have to be nominated and seconded under the election code.
Under the election code, the band council is required to reside within a 50-mile radius of the band office during their term.
The election will be held on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake Native Development Corporation. Eligible electors can vote in person at the polling station or by mail-in ballot.
The elected chief and councillors will serve for the next four-year term at the Skin Tyee First Nation office.
