Prince Rupert holds off Hydaburg in barn-burner for ANBT Masters title

In a rematch of the 2024 final, Prince Rupert achieves redemption

From the beginning of the Masters final at the 2025 All Native Basketball Tournament, it looked like the Prince Rupert Trojans were out for redemption after falling to Hydaburg AK in last year's final and earlier in this year's tournament.

The Trojans came out with heavy defensive pressure from the tip-off and had developed a 20-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. Kyle Cline, who will almost certainly be at the top of discussions for 2025 end, was a beast on the boards keeping the Hydaburg offence at bay.

Everything was still clicking for the home team, but Hydaburg showed a little more grit in the second frame as 2024 MVP Vinny Edenshaw started getting things going.

At the half, the Trojans maintained a comfortable lead of 39 - 25.

They also came out hot in the third quarter, netting a three-pointer on the first drive.

Hydaburg, though, is nothing if not explosive especially when Edenshaw is on the floor. And Edenshaw is always on the floor, despite reports he was nursing a hamstring.

Edenshaw answered Rupert's opening salvo with two back-to-back three-pointers of his own and Hydaburg started to close the gap.

As the clock wound down on the third frame Prince Rupert was down to a five-point lead when Edenshaw nailed a buzzer-beater from downtown to make the score 52 - 50.

The final 10 minutes turned out to be one of the most wild finishes in annals of All Native history.

Every time the Trojans started to see a little bit of light on the scoreboard, Edenshaw would bang in another three-pointer to bring the Alaskans back into striking distance.

With less than two minutes to play, a sloppy turnover by Rupert's Derek Reece in their own end led to an Edenshaw layup and Hydaburg's first lead of the game 72-71.

Prince Rupert had an answer, but with only one possession separating the two teams, Cline uncharacteristically missed two free-throws giving Hydaburg the ball with a chance to tie.

With Hydaburg threatening Rupert put on the pressure stealing the ball and giving Chris Campbell a fast-break for a 79-74 lead and only eight seconds on the clock.

When the dust settled, even Vinny Edenshaw's incredible 52 points was not enough to keep Prince Rupert out of the winner's circle for a second year.

For Prince Rupert, Cline had 20 points and 13 boards. As a team they had 11 steals and forced 22 turnovers.
