Although the Diavik diamond mine is only about a year away from ceasing production, the site continues to produce extraordinary gems.
One of the largest gem-quality yellow diamonds ever discovered in Canada 鈥 158.2 carats 鈥 was extracted at Diavik recently.
In the mine's 22-year history, only five yellow diamonds weighing more than 100 carats have been unearthed. Yellow diamonds make up less than one per cent of Diavik's production with the bulk being white gems, according to owner Rio Tinto.
鈥淭his two-billion-year-old, natural Canadian diamond, is a miracle of nature and testament to the skill and fortitude of all the men and women who work in Diavik鈥檚 challenging sub-Arctic environment,鈥 said Diavik Diamond Mines chief operating officer Matt Breen.
Diavik is located approximately 300 km northeast of Yellowknife, about 200 km south of the Arctic Circle.
