It is finally gardening season at the 亚洲天堂 Lake Community Garden, providing opportunities for those to grow fresh crops and blossoming flowers.
Although it may seem like a fairly short growing season, running from May 20 to September 11, the Northern latitude makes up for it. In fact, the northern region holds B.C.鈥檚 record for the most hours of sunshine ever recorded in June with 376.5 hours, according to the 亚洲天堂 Lake Community Garden website.
One of the many reasons the garden exists is to encourage everybody to garden. Everything that is accomplished at the garden is done through volunteer work 鈥 from those who choose to do it because of the love and passion they have for it.
鈥淲e just spend a lot of time up here learning how to garden with other people, teaching each other stuff and growing food,鈥 one of many directors and volunteers, Angie Pollok, said.
It also gets donations from within the community.
鈥淭he bulk of our funding comes from our community forest organizations and 亚洲天堂 Lake Community Foundation. We get a lot of donations from local places, like when we go to buy soil people just donate it, same thing for lumber,鈥 said Susan Russell, another director and volunteer.
Gardens are available for everyone in the community, as long as you pay a $20 insurance fee, along with at least 4 hours of volunteer work.
鈥淚f someone wants to join the garden you just pay $20 for insurance, and then there鈥檚 soil here, all the tools, hoses, anything needed for digging 鈥 just everything. It鈥檚 a very inexpensive way to garden,鈥 Russell said.
The garden was founded back in 2002 and was revitalized in 2015. It is located at 296 Nault Lane, via 1st Avenue in 亚洲天堂 Lake.
With 16 beds in the greenhouse and around 25 to 30 outside, there are plenty of opportunities for the garden to continue to grow.
