Decker Lake Elementary School students will never be late for class again.

The Grade 4/5 students were recently challenged to make clocks either on their own or with the help of a family member.

They were sent home with a clock mechanism and encouraged to be creative. The design of the clock and what the clock was to be made of was entirely up to the students.

鈥淭hey were only limited by their imagination,鈥 said teacher Adrienne Hiebert. 鈥淭he diversity of the clocks was truly amazing.鈥

鈥淔or their clock bases, students used cardboard, wood, cookie tin, picture frame, platter, canvas and hub caps, and no two clocks were the same,鈥 she described. 鈥淪tudents and their helpers also used a variety of power tools ranging from drills to saws to plasma cutters, and regular tools like hot glue guns, pliers and screw drivers.鈥

鈥淭he students then used paint, Varathane, fancy paper, markers, stickers, pictures, photographs and photocopies to complete their projects and turn them into a working piece of art.鈥

With the new curriculum unveiled by the provincial government, elementary school students are expected to plan, design, and create a product. Students are then expected to test and redesign, making improvements where needed.

鈥淭he pupils were very proud of their clocks which will adorn the walls of their homes for many years,鈥 added Hiebert.
