B.C. Premier John Horgan met with First Nations chiefs, local leaders and first responders at the 亚洲天堂 Lake Fire Camp Friday to discuss the wildfire situation in the 亚洲天堂 Lake area.
Cheslatta Carrier Nation Chief Corrina Leween told him that First Nations have 鈥減ulled through to set the systems up that were not in place by the provincial government.鈥
Horgan responded by saying the province needs to deploy more resources to the area and have 鈥減eople on the ground,鈥 and that he will 鈥渄o his best to make that happen.鈥
Former Lake Babine Nation Chief Wilf Adam told Horgan that better communication is needed.
鈥淚f we go to the regional district or town, they always say that we [First Nations] are a federal responsibility while things are burning,鈥 said Adam. 鈥淎ll of that has to be dropped somehow to make sure that all of us work together, fighting this together.鈥
Horgan responded that it鈥檚 in 鈥渢imes of crisis that character shows through.鈥
鈥淲e need that leadership to be showing at levels of government as well,鈥 said Horgan. 鈥淣o more pointing [fingers saying] it鈥檚 your responsibility; I鈥檓 confident that they get that. I really am.鈥
Horgan added that his heart is with 亚洲天堂 Lake residents as the region goes through one of the most difficult wildfire seasons ever.
鈥淚鈥檓 proud of the community, I鈥檓 proud of the leadership 鈥 Indigenous and non-Indigenous 鈥 pulling together to protect each other,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he provincial government will be here for the recovery.鈥
This was Horgan鈥檚 second attempt to visit 亚洲天堂 Lake this summer. He was expected to fly to 亚洲天堂 Lake on Aug. 21 to discuss the wildfire situation; however, due to smoke conditions, his plane was unable to land at Baker Airport.
