Former Granisle resident and Lake Babine Nation member, Greg Poirier, 39, has been sentenced to 25 years in jail in a New York prison.
Originally from Old Fort, he is the son of Greg Dennis and Mary Ann Poirier. Greg lived and went to school for part of his life in Granisle and frequently visited relatives in ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake.
Poirier, also known as Greg Simon Dennis-Poirier and 'Chauchee', has been linked to several sexual attacks in Canada and the United States.
Labeled by a New York professor as a dangerous sex offender in 2005 while living in Vancouver, he followed an Abbotsford woman home from a store and attacked her in her driveway. He was also charged in 2007 for sexual assault in Vernon.
He was sentenced to 30 days in prison for the Abbotsford assault. Several months after his release from prison here in Canada he moved to New York to be employed as a truck driver. His next victim was in 2008, when he followed a women into her Manhattan apartment building and pushed her into her complex and locked the door, then sexually assaulted her. The victim bit Poirier's arm during the assault and that is when he fled, leaving his DNA behind.
Poirier was already in prison serving a five-year sentence for other similar sexual assaults when he received this 25-year sentence. He still has outstanding warrants in Canada.
