The Lakes Animal Friendship Society (LAFS) was able to raise $575 on Giving Tuesday to support local critters.
Giving Tuesday, which took place on Nov. 28, 2017, is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday.
The donations surpassed LAFS鈥 goal of raising $500 that day.
鈥淭he generous donations went over our goal and that means more companion animals will be helped through our spay/neuter, doghouse and community cats programs,鈥 said LAFS director Alistair Schroff. 鈥淥ur doghouse program means dogs, and even cats, are given a warmer and safer place when they are outside.鈥
鈥淭hey have also supported our humane education for school children and youth鈥攁n important step in improving the lives of animals in our communities,鈥 he added. 鈥淲e are so grateful for people鈥檚 generosity and kindness.鈥
Schroff said these community donations help dogs such as Honey Bear, who was the inspiration behind LAFS. Thrown into a river to drown with her brothers and sisters, Honey Bear was found near starvation and rescued just in time.
鈥淎fter receiving some much needed vet care, she found the most amazing home, filled with so much love,鈥 said Schroff. 鈥淓ven though this sweet pup only lived three years due to health complications, she left behind her loving legacy.鈥
鈥淪o many dogs and cats need our help to find families that will keep and love them forever,鈥 he continued. 鈥淎nd even more pets need to be spayed and neutered to stop the overpopulation that results in miserable, unhealthy lives for those without homes.鈥
鈥淗ealthy, happy animals are part of healthy, happy families and communities,鈥 he added.
The Lakes Animal Friendship Society is a registered charity run by volunteers with no paid staff. All donations are used to help animals in the community. To find out how to keep supporting LAFS, visit http://www.lakesanimalfriendship.ca/ways-to-help.
