Construction on the anticipated REEF (Ridley Island Energy Export Facility) bulk liquid gas project has begun.

According to an announcement from the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA), land clearing began on the 190-acre project site during the week of Dec. 4 after the PRPA approved vegetation removal on its leased lands.

AltaGas and Royal Vopak, the two proponents who announced the REEF partnership in April are hoping to access the lucrative Asian market with liquid petroleum gas exports from Ridley.

A final investment decision is yet to be made on the facility, though the joint-venture says it is confident it will reach a positive decision by the first half of 2024.

The PRPA’s announcement coincided with Trigon Terminals’ update on its proposed LPG export facility project, which has been disputed by the PRPA.

The port authority says it has given the REEF project exclusive LPG rights for the Prince Rupert port.

Trigon says it has commenced legal action.
