Norman

Elizabeth (Betty) Norman, age 94, passed away peacefully at The Pines in ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake, BC on Sunday June 5, 2016.

Betty was born on September 29, 1921 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was the youngest of five children born to Joseph and Bella. While each of her siblings enjoyed longevity, Betty was the longest living and last of her generation.

Betty was in her teens when WW11 broke out. She was posted to southern England, on the Channel Coast, as a radar operator. While always looking for the good things in life (rather than the horror of the bombings and fire), Betty often recounted that this was where she learned to drive. It was by no means the traditional car she was taught to drive, but rather big, heavy trucks. She was always very proud of this skill and often reflected upon the accomplishment.

Some years following the war Betty moved to Rhubodach, on the Isle of Bute. The relocation provided her with a chance to work in retail, become a stage actress and most importantly, to enable her young son Greg, the opportunity of knowing his aging grandparents. In time however, it became apparent that relocation for exposure to greater opportunities was necessary. In 1965 they embarked upon The Empress of Canada and after 7 days of rough seas, landed at Montreal. It was a short stay and ultimately North Vancouver became their new home. The years that followed saw Betty working for a sequence of electrical companies before, at the age of 63, going back to school. She became a home care nurse and thoroughly enjoyed her days assisting others and continued to do so until retirement. It was then that she moved north to ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake, to live closer to her son Greg (Cory) and their family. Living in the cabin overlooking the Francois Lake ferry landing brought particular enjoyment to Betty's days. She loved watching the ferry and enjoyed the numerous birds and animals visiting in her yard. Mac, her west highland terrier, became a constant companion and photos of him could be found throughout the cabin.

The move to Tweedsmuir House provided Betty with a second family. She really enjoyed time on the Rambler, dinners and special occasions with the other residents and helpful staff. There was always a warm welcome and someone with whom to talk and laugh.

Betty spent her final days both in the Lakes District Hospital and The Pines. Again, she was welcomed by supportive, gentle and caring staff.

While grateful for the comforting care Betty received, she will be missed by her family; Greg (Cory), Geoff (Cassie), Brianne (Brian), Alison, Laura, John and her loving relatives Isabella, David and Trisha. As well as the numerous friends she had the good fortune of meeting over her lifetime. "The song may be over… but the melody lingers on."

A Celebration of Life will be held at Tweedsmuir House on June 30 at 2:00 p.m.

Sleep in peace Mom, until we meet again.
