As ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lakes new mayor, Luke Strimbold has already put ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake on the map. He is not only historically the youngest mayor in the entire province, but almost the youngest mayor in Canada.
Not bad for a 21 year old.
To put it more into perspective, you just have to think back to what you were doing when you were 21. For me it was definitely not chasing down the seat of mayor to make a positive difference in the community.
Luke does have a clear vision for ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake and I think the community can count on him to follow through with his goals.
I have been to just about all of the council meetings held over the past year since he was appointed to council and I have seen him time and again asking how a decision will impact community members, how much money a decision will cost tax payers and I think he is correct when he says, he is not afraid to ask tough questions - even if it means his opinion is not going along with the general or ‘popular’ opinion at the council table.
He was a good councillor and I think he will be an equally great mayor.
Some people say that being so young may hinder his performance, but I think it will help.
Every time I see Luke he is talking to youth and asking them for their opinion and listening to what matters to them.
If our community is going to make positive changes then getting involved with the youth is a big step in the right direction.
He was born and raised here, so you know the decisions he makes will be good ones because his main goal is to see ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake become successful and come together as a community.
Perhaps he will even inspire other young leaders to step up to the plate.
I think he is proof that age is not a barrier to success, you just have to set yourself a goal and work towards it.
If you ask me this has been one of the best things that has happened to ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake in while - we now have a fresh new face at the helm and Luke is someone who is not afraid of rolling up his sleeves and working hard.
Luke said to me that since the age of 12 he decided that he wanted to be involved in municipal politics - that’s pretty inspiring to have a clear direction for your future when you are 12 and then follow through with it.
I think some young people at the age of 12 are worrying about the new pimple on their face or what their hair looks like that day.
His past record as councillor shows me that he thinks beyond - encompassing the whole community.
And he bases his decisions on what he thinks is best for our community. You just gotta like that.
I was unable to vote because as a permanent resident it is a privilege that I am not afforded, but I am glad to see the community of ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake taking a chance and stepping out of their comfort zone, taking a leap of faith with this young man.
I think from past performances with Luke we will only see a positive change in our community.
It has been said time and time again that the youth is our future ... Luke is our future and I think he is ready for the challenge.
