Write letters and be heard

Editor:

Our surgery and its staff are not a luxury, they are a necessity.

There’s an expression common among us older fallers and I suspect it’s true of truckers, bunchermen, millworkers .... namely, ‘I don’t care if I get killed, I just don’t want to be hurt real bad.’

But so long as men and woman do dangerous jobs, with dangerous tools and machines there are going to be accidents and at those times we count on our first aiders, doctors, nurses and the facilities they are trained to work in.

Last August, when a ‘widow-maker’ out on the Binta fire didn’t quite succeed, I had to be choppered to the ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake base, trucked up to emergency and was treated almost immediately by two very competent nurses whose names were Geraldine and Antoinette, as well as Dr. Hill.

They cleaned off the layers of soot and blood, put seven stitches in my forehead, x-rayed my neck and released me.

Dr. Hill came in early the next morning to x-ray my knees and squeezed me in the afternoon without an appointment, to give me written permission to go back to work.

That’s called going the extra mile and they did it all calmly, expertly and even with humour.

I appreciated what they did for me so much and I thank God for them.

It’s been that way four times for me, over a career spanning 30 years.

The first time a ragged thigh wound from falling in big spring-loaded blowdown, requiring intricate sewing skills.

Different doctors, different nurses, but the fact remains that working people in this area need these dedicated personnel to be there when wounds need stitching or bones need setting.

And what about severe burns, amputations, difficult births, crushes, concussions …………

Are the veterinarians supposed to take over if we drive these wonderful people away?

Perhaps others reading this have benefited from our valued, competent, necessary and overworked doctors and nurses.

Please write in with your comments and be heard before it’s too late.
