In This Episode: Henri Belisle of TQ Construction and homeowner Dr Janet Simons are back to review the now-completed heritage renovation project. With the goal of achieving a high-performance energy efficiency home, Henri and Janet share lessons learned including design build challenges, scope creep, and even some pesky woodpeckers too.
鈥榃e built it the way we thought would be the best structurally, because that鈥檚 what our instinct led us to do. But then going through it, we realized that if we had basically built the stair slightly off the wall, and properly sealed it there, we wouldn鈥檛 have lost as much air in the building through that one point.鈥 Henri Belisle, TQ Construction
鈥楾here鈥檚 always trade offs. Understanding what we are willing to trade off is important. There鈥檚 always going to be a judgment, is the builder going to talk to the client about this or are they going to make a call on the homeowner鈥檚 behalf because you can鈥檛 be calling 18 times a day for every decision. So, I think there鈥檚 some calibration always that goes on there regarding communication.鈥 Dr Janet Simons, Homeowner.
