A request from the 亚洲天堂 Lake Vortex women's hockey team raised more questions than answers last week.
The team wrote a letter to council suggesting they empty, sort and recycle cans from the Village of 亚洲天堂 Lake's new municipal recycling bins in a bid to raise funds for the team.
"Our team would like to offer a proposal that we empty the bottles and cans section of the bins and sort and return the contents to the appropriate depot as a fundraiser for us," Connie Anderson and Cherie McEntire, team representatives, wrote in the letter.
According to the team, the recent development of a Highway 16 women's league means there will be additional ice rentals and that any funds collected from the bottles and cans will stay local as they will be put back into paying for ice time at the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena.
In a previous council meeting when the recycling bins were unveiled village chief administrative officer, Sheryl Worthing had said that the public works crew picked up approximately $300 in discarded bottles and cans from around the village the previous year and that the new bins would be placed in key locations around the village including the sani-dump and in the downtown core close to businesses in a bid to capture the most waste.
Mayor Bernice Magee said it was great to see members of the community taking notice of what is happening in the community and being proactive in their fundraising efforts.
Worthing agreed, but said she was thinking about other community groups missing out on the same opportunity.
"I am concerned about handing one group something and others missing out," Worthing said.
She applauded Vortex's suggestion, however she felt a few further options could be brought back to council for consideration.
"Who would be responsible? What if they missed a week? Technically it is a unionized job that I would be taking away so I would also need to receive approval from the union," she added.
Mayor Magee said that perhaps it would be a better solution to rotate the collection of bottles and cans from the municipal recycling bins through various community organizations.
"The Vortex could have it one year and someone else the next," she added.
Councillor Quentin Beach asked Worthing if the women's hockey team are awarded the same privileges for ice time at the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena as other user groups such as 亚洲天堂 Lake Minor Hockey.
"Minor hockey do get better ice times, as the Vortex are scheduled for late evening practices but this is also cheaper [rates for them] than prime time," Worthing said. "They get the same privileges though," she added.
Council agreed that more options should to be presented to them before any decision could be made. Worthing said to council that staff would look into the issue and present council with more options in the coming weeks.
