A strip of unused land adjacent to the Lake District Secondary School (LDSS) is set to be upgraded with an educational walking trail.
The ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake Soccer Club has proposed a 250 metre long 'arboretum trail' which will parallel the existing fence line below the LDSS running track.
Currently the land is unused and the soccer club hopes that by establishing a walking trail local residents and visitors will be encouraged to move off the running track and onto a more visually appealing walkway.
The arboretum trail will have a gravel walkway and be planted with native species of trees on either side of the walkway.
Once completed the trees will screen out the industrial activities of the adjacent CN railway tracks and the trail will also reduce the drying effects of blowing winds to the fields, as well as provide a windbreak to reduce blowing dust.
Phase one of the arboretum walking trail project is estimated to cost $10,000 and involves layout and construction of the trail.
Phase two has a price tag of $31,760. Trees native to B.C. will be selected by a committee of local representatives. Approximately 50 saplings will be planted along the trail and each tree will be accompanied by a plaque that identifies the species.
The club have also secured a number of funding partners for the project including Nechako Kitimaat Development Fund Society who have approved a $5,000 contribution towards phase one and $5,100 of in-kind donations from the soccer club to cover labour and project administration costs.
