Vernon cyclist smashes female record at 500-mile Utah race

At the Hoodoo 500, Leah Goldstein broke the previous female record time by over eight hours

Vernon's Leah Goldstein can add the Hoodoo 500 to the list of ultra-cycling races she's left her mark on.

Finishing the 500-mile Utah race on Monday, Goldstein broke the previous female Hoodoo 500 record by over eight hours.

Her finishing time was 39 hours and 37 minutes, making her the fastest female ever to finish the race.

"She road unsupported and was second overall in the Voyager 50+ Division and third overall in the Voyager Division!" a post on Goldstein's Facebook page stated.

"Leah would like to thank her awesome sponsors for their support!" the post added.

The Hoodoo 500 route passes through or around three national parks, three national monuments and several Utah state parks. It takes riders up mountains more than 10,000 feet high.

Because she did an unsupported race, Goldstein had to pack all her equipment herself.

Goldstein did her first unsupported race earlier this year, when she was the first woman to cross the finish line at the gruelling across the United States.
