ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake man raises funds for Legion

Brent Bishop has pledged to take an icy plunge
ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake legion faces apathy
The ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake Royal Canadian Legion faces troubling days ahead if it cannot form an executive committee.

A ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake resident is hoping to take an icy dive on his way to raising funds for the legion.

Brent Bishop is raising funds for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 50 in ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake through Brent's Polar Plunge, which will see the ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake native dive into the chilly depths of Francois Lake on Feb. 1 if he hits his $15,000 goal.

He is hoping to find 500 people who will each donate $30, but any donation amount is welcome.

A veteran of the Canadian army, Bishop decided to start the fundraiser to help with some of the financial problems plaguing the Legion.

"I am doing this fundraiser as Legions are very important to our veterans and also the families," he said.

Bishop is no stranger to fundraisers. He previously committed to shaving his beard if 100 people donated $5, then said he would shave his entire head as well if the pot increased to $1,000. He raised a total of $1,100 and is now bald and clean-shaven.

"Brent has been a loyal supporter of our branch of the Legion," said branch bookkeeper Jeanne Parkinson. "He has donated some of his pay when it became clear of the financial trouble that we were in and have donated many hours of his time to help us back up and running."

As of Jan. 21, 17 people had donated and a total of $520 had been raised.

There will also be hot dogs and hot chocolate on Feb. 1, following the plunge.

People who are interested in donating or learning more can e-transfer or email rcl50@live.ca or drop by the Legion branch.
