The family of Darcy Nutter, of the Cheslatta Carrier Nation is one of the recipients of a new log cabin home, which is now under construction.

Darcy鈥檚 father Bob, who lives in Wistaria, lost his house in last summer鈥檚 wildfires.

鈥淲e set up one temporary trailer [until the cabins are finished],鈥 Mike Robertson, senior policy advisor of Cheslatta Carrier Nation told Lakes District 亚洲天堂. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be [the Nutter鈥檚] home until hopefully next year. It鈥檚 fully serviced with water and power.鈥

The cabin is part of a training and building program conducted by the Carrier Nation, explained band Chief Corrina Leween.

鈥淲e鈥檙e building four units. Two will be given to the Nutter family and they鈥檙e going to make into one house,鈥 she said.

Rio Tinto donated money for the roofing of the houses.

鈥淚t was really heart-warming when they gave it to me,鈥 said Darcy, who added that Cheslatta鈥檚 donation included a back hoe, which he used to bury the rubble from the burned house.

The plan is to put the new log cabins on the foundation of the old house.

The home donation follows the family鈥檚 near-brush with tragedy last summer.

鈥淸Bob鈥檚] house burned to the ground in the fires and he didn鈥檛 have any insurance,鈥 Leween said.

Darcy and his father managed to leave about 20 minutes before the fire reached their house.

Assistance to the Nutter鈥檚 comes amid Cheslatta Nation facing a housing shortage in the community, with around 30 per cent of its 340 members - half of whom live on the reserve - on a waiting list for a home.

鈥淲e鈥檝e mandated ourselves to produce three houses per year,鈥 the Chief said.
