Kaien Island becomes first ever ANBT Women's Masters champion

Prince Rupert squad beats Hazelton 40 - 22

When the Kaien Island Sirens (Prince Rupert) and Gitxsan Mystics (Hazelton) took to the floor at the 2025 All Native Basketball Tournament Feb. 15, the outcome would be historic, whichever way the game went.

This was not just the first championship game of the 65th edition of the venerable tournament, but also the first-ever Women's Masters final.

At the end of 40 minutes, it was an echo from the past as the home team prevailed just as Kaien Island Intertribal did in 1993, the inaugural year of the women's division.

The game started out sluggishly with neither team really gelling. By the end of the first quarter, the Sirens had the edge at 9 - 4.

In the second, Hazelton came out hot, mounting a bit of a comeback before going cold again halfway through the period as Kaien Island dominated the boards.

The first half was characterized by turnovers due to loose ball handling and questionable passing on both sides of the ball leading to 18 turnovers for Prince Rupert and 16 for Hazelton.

Despite dominating rebounds, the Sirens could not get the ball to drop and it was 20 - 13 as the half ended. But a foul on Karina Wilson's attempted buzzer-beater put her at the line with three free throws and an opportunity to close the gap.

It was not to be though as all three circled the rim without going in.

Kaien Island took advantage of the momentum going into the third quarter with both offensive and defensive pressure forcing more turnovers, but again were not able to converit into a lot of points.

Nevertheless, they led 30 - 15 with 10 minutes to play.

In the fourth, Hazelton showed some life at one point cutting the lead to just seven points, but the Sirens came back to make the final 40 - 22.

The newly minted champions made their way to the winning circle undefeated beating New Aiyansh, Hazelton and Gtiwinksilkw.

Hazelton had to go through the back door for a second crack at the home team. In the loser's bracket, they went through Kitkatla, Greenville and Gitwinksilkw.
