Premier Christy .... who?

If there isn’t a few red faces at the Office of the Premier, there should be.

If there isn’t a few red faces at the Office of the Premier, there should be.

After all, congratulating Bernice Magee on being reelected to the seat of mayor in the November 2011 municipal election is quite an embarrassing mistake on behalf of the Premier.

It would have been a nice letter to receive ... if Magee had been re-elected. The letter is quite a joke really, especially since Magee did not even enter the election race as a candidate in the first place.

And, when you think about it, ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake’s new mayor elect, Luke Strimbold didn’t just slip into his seat quietly. ÑÇÖÞÌìÌÃpapers, television, social media posts and radio stations across B.C. all announced the fact that ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake’s new mayor is Luke Strimbold and that he is just 21 years old. He is the youngest mayor in B.C.

He really did put ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake in the media spotlight when the election results came in.

The Premier’s bungled letter may have been a little easier to forgive had there not been such a fanfare. But there was.

You would think, that before the letter was written by the Premier, or by someone from the Office of the Premier which is probably more likely, that they would have actually thought to do a little fact checking. It only takes a quick phone call to the Village of ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake office, or even less time to Google the information. Type in ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake mayor on Google .... the name Luke Strimbold comes up.  Clearly this was not done.

You have to wonder then, how ‘on the radar’ ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake really is in the eyes of the Premier? For months we have been told by Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad, that ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake and the need for a hospital is on the government’s radar ... really?  I am not so sure now.

I did contact the Office of the Premier to speak with Christy Clark about the letter a number of times .... both by email and phone. Mysteriously there was no one available. Although I wasn’t able to speak with anyone directly I was able to leave a message on the answering machine. I was hoping someone would get back to me with an explanation ....I thought that perhaps there may be a logical reason for the bungle ...  although I have thought about this for a few days now and I can’t think of what that reason could possibly be.

I think that Mayor Strimbold certainly deserves a humble apology from the Premier and I think that he is right about the province needing to communicate more with municipalities.

We might be all the way up here in the North, but we still cast votes at election time. Perhaps the Premier could drop by sometime and visit. After her last whistle stop tour of the North on her campaign trail, I doubt she remembers very much at all about ÑÇÖÞÌìÌà Lake.

Clearly she doesn’t know who the current mayor is. Perhaps we should all say, Christy who?, next election.
