Open letter to Adrian Dix, leader of the provincial NDP
I wonder if you are aware that the Liberals quietly snuck in an increase in the PST on used vehicles not sold by a dealer? Before the HST a used vehicle cost you five per cent GST and seven per cent PST if you bought from a dealer but only seven per cent PST if bought privately.
With the HST of course everything went up to 12 per cent. One would think that after the end of the HST they would be paying the seven percent PST only on used vehicles bought privately; however, the government simply raised the PST to 12 per cent, whereas the PST at a dealer is still seven per cent.
How is that fair?
I wonder if a legal challenge on discriminatory grounds would be successful?
I find this type of thing contrary to the intent of the referendum eliminating the HST. I wonder how many other voters are aware of this kind of sneaky manoeuvre on the part of the government to maintain a HST level of taxation for something that was not subject to the GST prior to the implementation of the HST? Is this something that you would look at if you form a government in May?
