Coyotes desperately chasing win off the ice in bid to stay in Arizona

Upcoming land auction key to franchise securing property for new arena

The Arizona Coyotes said Thursday night they鈥檙e committed to that could pave the way for the NHL club to remain in the Phoenix area after .

The team hopes to buy the 110-acre (445,154 square meter) plot of land on Northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and the Loop 101 in north Phoenix and build a privately funded arena and entertainment district.

The Arizona State Land Department set the auction for June 27 in a legal notice published Thursday. The starting bid is $68.5 million.

鈥淎rizona is our home, and an incredible market where the Coyotes belong,鈥 owner Alex Meruelo said in a statement. 鈥淭his district would provide a beautiful home for the Arizona Coyotes for decades to come. Our loyal fans deserve this vibrant gathering place that would serve as a landmark to create lifelong memories.鈥

The Coyotes are nearing the end of their second season at a 5,000-seat rink on Arizona State鈥檚 campus while looking for a long-term solution. NHL Players鈥 Association executive director Marty Walsh has voiced concern about being the second tenant in that small of a building, saying several deadlines have passed.

This plan is another ray of hope. The Coyotes plan to construct a 17,000-seat arena along with a new practice facility, a concert venue, restaurants and more.

Commissioner Gary Bettman in an interview with The Associated Press last month said Meruelo was working on the situation.

鈥淚t鈥檚 hard work, and he鈥檚 committed to it,鈥 Bettman said, declining to put a deadline on the process. 鈥淚 think sooner rather than later. I think people are craving certainty. And we are, too, but this isn鈥檛 a 60-minute game where the light goes on and the game鈥檚 over. He鈥檚 working on it. We still have some time.鈥

Meruelo and president and CEO Xavier Gutierrez over the past year have shifted focus to an arena plan that would not require voter approval, after a by Tempe voters.
