The B.C. government鈥檚 announcement to increase the minimum wage to $15/hour is good news for low-wage workers in B.C. but the long timeline will continue to keep workers in poverty for too long.

A new grocery store will soon be moving into the old Super Valu location in Fraser Lake. Locally owned and operated, Canada鈥檚 Grocery Store and More will be a full service grocery store. The Fraser Lake Corner Store will remain open and convert into a convenience type store.

Sears Canada has recently received court approval to close its remaining stores , affecting thousands of workers across Canada. According to Jarrett Anderson, owner of Blu Jay Sports and Sears in 亚洲天堂 Lake, this also affects the Sears part of his business, which had already stopped selling in-store appliances last year. 鈥淭he Sears part of our store has been quiet for the last eight or nine months anyway, so it isn鈥檛 a huge surprise,鈥� said Anderson.

Almost 20 properties have benefited from this program

The College of New Caledonia鈥檚 (CNC) trades discovery program has been delving students into the industries of welding, carpentry, electrical and plumbing. Participants get a taste of the basics in a hands-on environment to discover if a career in a particular trades might be right for them. This program also allows Grade 11 and 12 students to take courses at the college and earn duel credits towards first-year technical training.
