The first 2024 broadcast of The Met Opera: Live in HD
The first co-presentation by the Lakes District Arts Council and The Beacon Theatre takes place on Sunday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. sharp at The Beacon Theatre. The featured opera broadcast is X: The Life and Time of Malcolm X.
Anthony Davis鈥檚 groundbreaking and influential opera premiered in 1986. The opera arrives at the Met in Robert O鈥橦ara鈥檚 new staging that imagines Malcolm as an Everyman whose story transcends time and space. An exceptional cast of young Met stars are featured in the operatic retelling of the civil rights leader鈥檚 life. Baritone Will Liverman, who triumphed in the Met premiere of Fire Shut Up in My Bones, sings Malcolm X, alongside soprano Leah Hawkins as his mother Louise.
Mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis takes on the role of his sister Ella. Bass-baritone Michael Sumuel portrays his brother Reginald, and tenor Victor Ryan Robertson is Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. Kazem Abdullah conducts the newly revised score, which provides a layered, jazz-inflected setting for Thulani Davis鈥檚 libretto. Content Advisory: X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X contains strong language.
