Throughout the week at the 2025 All Native Basketball Tournament, the Similkameen Starbirds showed all signs of a dynasty in the making.
The Starbirds, led by the Jade (Montgomery-Ried) and Jasmine (Montgomery-Waardenburg) show, breezed through the Women's winners bracket doubling or nearly doubling the scores of all their opponents.
The final, played Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15) was no different.
Vancouver All My Relations (AMR) had the misfortune of coming up against the powerful Starbirds on Thursday sending them to the loser's bracket where they had to knock off Prince Rupert, Greenville and Hazelton to get into the championship game.
Relentless defence shut down the Vancouver defence, particularly their star forward Shenise Sigsworth, around whom the AMR offence is centred.
By the end of the first quarter Similkameen had put up a 20 - 9 lead. And while Vancouver would find a way to put up some points in the second and third quarters, it was never enough as the Starbirds always had an answer and then some.
Going into the final frame, with the Starbirds up by 28 points, the outcome was all but a forgone conclusion.
Vancouver did manage a run around the halfway point of the fourth quarter cutting the lead to 20. It was short-lived, however, when a foul on a basket by Madison Terbasket put her at the line where she completed the three-point play.
At the closing buzzer it was a lopsided 75-53.
The Similkameen win was a team effort with Terbasket putting up 16 points, Mikeila Ridsdale scoring 11 and 15 points coming off the bench.
Similkameen becomes only the third team in Women's All Native history to win three titles in a row.
